About the Show
In the United States, the name of Hanns Eisler, up to now, has had a certain notoriety. After all he lived to write
the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic. But that era is over, and it is high time to celebrate Eisler's music
as music and the lyrics he used as poetry and, actually, Eric Bentley has been trying to do this for years—his Songs
of Hanns Eisler, now accessible on I-tunes, having been issued as a 12-inch LP on the Folkways label back in the 1960's.
Today Karyn Levitt, the distinguished lyric soprano, makes a real breakthrough for Eisler, with her own selection of Eisler songs in Bentley versions.
Most of these versions are translations from the works of Bertolt Brecht but other German poets are represented as is William Shakespeare.
